Air emissions - volatile organic compounds (VOC)
In FY19 emissions increased at Camden and Newcastle Gas Storage Facility due to increased flaring activity, whereas at Somerton Power Station emissions increased due to an increase in electricity generation. Emissions at AGL Torrens remained constant in FY19 due to increased fuel oil combustion offsetting decreased natural gas combustion. A decrease in emissions at AGL Loy Yang in FY19 was mainly due to increased unplanned turbine outages whereas the decrease in emissions at Liddell was mainly due to variation in stack emission testing. Emissions decreased at Silver Springs Oil and Gas Project due to a decrease in fuel combustion. Emissions for the National Assets were not reported in FY19 due to the portfolio of facilities being sold during FY19. The variation in emissions for other sites was generally consistent with the previous year.
FY19 data was updated in December 2019. A subset of data (comprising emissions associated with the combustion of black coal at Bayswater and Liddell power stations, black and brown coal as well as natural gas at AGL Loy Yang Power Station, and gas and fuel oil at AGL Torrens) was reported with the initial release of the FY19 Annual Report on 08 August 2019.
All figures have been restated to the nearest kilogram from FY17 onwards.
FY18 Liddell Power Station data has been revised. FY18 VOC stack tests were reviewed post NPI submission and an outlier stack test was found and omitted. AGL issued a subsequent revised report to NPI.
FY15 data for Bayswater and Liddell power stations represents emissions from the facility for the full financial year, although AGL only commenced operating these facilities from 2 September 2014.
Air emissions data for AGL sites is publicly reported NPI data (see www.npi.gov.au/) with the exception of Hydrocarbon Extractions (HCE). HCE emissions for VOC comprise EPA reported data incorporating site-specific emission factors, which are more representative than NPI estimates.
The National Assets were sold in FY19.
Wallumbilla LPG Plant became operational in 2016 hence NPI reporting commenced in FY17.
The emission factors used in AGL's NPI reports are sourced from relevant industry emission estimation technique manuals available on the NPI website.
